Just two days before Jesus was arrested, He continued to teach about the Kingdom of God and challenge those around Him to live for God. In the reading today the story about the Wedding Banquet really challenged me.
In Matthew 22:1-14 Jesus tells a story about a King who prepares an amazing party and invites some guests. The guests don't come however and some even attack the King's servants. The King then goes out and invites common people on the street, both good people and bad, to join his celebration. They accept his invitation and fill the King's hall for an amazing party.
The statement that really stood out to me was the reason most of the first group of guests who were invited didn't come. It says:
But they paid no attention and went off - one to his field, another to his business.
These weren't bad people. Most likely they were hard working, good citizens that wanted to put in their day's efforts to work the crops in their fields or further their business. Perhaps they were focused on providing for their families, or doing good to work to care for their employees. Perhaps they saw the work they were doing as benefiting their community and people around them.
However, in the midst of their daily tasks and work, they missed the invitation from the King. They said yes to the good, and missed out on the great. They were so focused on the ordinary, they missed the extraordinary the King wanted for them.
What is the field or business in your life that pulls your attention from God? What good things are you currently saying YES to, at the expense of MISSING or saying NO to what God wants? Maybe you don't have to give up something... maybe it's just building into the flow of your life times to be sensitive and listen to God.
Be on the look out for invitations He is extending to you.
