I spend a lot of time connecting with other young people in their 20s. One of the challenges in my generation I believe is a lack of dreaming. Perhaps it's due to the realities of our times, or pressures from culture or disappointments in life but it seems many young people today either lack or have so far suppressed their dreams for the future that they have forgotten they are there.
Here are some questions I try and ask people to get an idea of what God's placed in them and where He may take them in the future even though they don't see it themselves.
- What are you dreams for the future?
- What are you passionate about?
- What desires has God placed in your heart?
- If you could do anything for God, what would it be?
- If you do anything at all, what would you be doing in 5 or 10 years?
We see God speaking to people in the Bible about their future through a variety of ways. For example, with Joseph God gave him a very clear and vivid dream about his future. With Jeremiah and Paul, God gave them a vision about where He was going to take them and have them do. Psalm 37:4 talks about the desires of our heart, and how if we delight in God that He will give them to us. This comes from us being created by God and many of our desires being God birthed.
I believe every individual has greatness in them. God has created them with a purpose and mission to impact and change their world. While the possibilities of what this looks like are infinite (we serve an infinitely creative God), the potential is there. My heart as a follower of Christ, friend, father and pastor is to help people discover what God's agenda is for each person and to help them to start moving in that direction.
