In Exodus (the book before Leviticus) we see the Israelites flee from Egypt. Through a miraculous set of events God makes the way for the Israelites to leave their slavery in Egypt and gain their freedom.
The Israelites were a rag-tag group of individuals. Almost immediately they start complaining to Moses and God, they're uncomfortable, they don't know what to do, they don't like what they have to eat, and at several points they wish they were back in Egypt where, even as slaves, they would have familiar food and a place to live. They didn't know how to live life in this new place God had taken them. They made lots of mistakes and everything seemed pretty hopeless.
Then towards the end of Exodus, all through Leviticus and even early Numbers we see rule after rule, law after law, and regulation after regulation laid out in pain-staking detail on how the Israelites should live. This detail is what makes these books so difficult to read (and why I'm glad I'm done with them!)
Then in Numbers 10:11-36 we see the Israelites graduate. No longer are they sitting around learning all these rules, that time is past... it's now time to live them out. We see a glorious procession as the Israelites follow God out of the Desert of Sinai. It's an amazing picture, something of epic proportions, as they march tribe by tribe, each group fulfilling the purpose God set apart for them to do.
It's like a freshman going into college naive, unprepared, immature and undisciplined. When that student graduates their senior year they are ready to enter the real world. This is where the Israelites were. They started out as a rag-tag group of individuals, they left this period as a people prepared to live out the destiny God had for them.
We are no different. By our nature we are people that live by emotions, chasing after every momentary desire, undisciplined, not knowing how to best live life. God gives us guidelines and ways of living out our relationship with Him such as Bible study, prayer, serving, worship, tithing, relationships with others to train and prepare us to live out the destiny He has for us.
Are you letting God prepare you for what lies ahead? Or, do you flee discipline and structure, because you think you know how to live life best? I encourage you to listen to God. Not only is His way best now, but it will make your future much more enjoyable, fulfilling and meaningful.
<Paul Breinlich - thanks for our conversation at Life Church on Sunday. It really opened my eyes to the above!>
